Renovation Transformation: Adding Natural Light and a Master Suite
This house is in the historic Grove Park neighborhood of Asheville and is surrounded by stately homes. The house was originally built as a modest ranch in the 1960’s and lacked architectural integrity compared to other homes in the neighborhood.
In assessing the owners needs which included transforming the appearance of the home to be more in harmony with the character of the neighborhood, the owners, contractor and myself worked closely in prioritizing what was to be done, giving particular attention to staying within the construction budget while being sensitive in the use of appropriate exterior materials.
The existing house had a closed-in feel and admitting natural light to the interior space was high on the owners’ list of requirements. Their appreciation of the prairie-style influenced the final exterior design. The former entry to the house was awkward and hidden. Subsequently, the new entry is large and inviting. Once inside, a graceful stairway brings guests up to an open and light filled living area. Additions to the existing structure include a new master bedroom suite, garage and an open yet defined living/dining area.
In keeping with the architectural details of this historic area, touches of stained glass, natural local elk stone, stucco and deep overhangs add to the richness of this rehabilitated home.
