Bittersweet Cottage & Suite
Renovation Challenge: Turning Classic Cottages into Mountain Getaways
The owners recognized that their existing mountain cottages were sited perfectly to take advantage of breathtaking views of downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond. Built as summer cottages in the 1940’s out of brick, formidable wood beams with ceramic tiled roofs, they were also in need of complete renovation which involved everything except the exterior walls and roofs of the buildings.
In order to maximize the views and open up the interior spaces, large window openings were created. From there, outdoor spaces such as decks, a waterfall, fish pond and hot tub were designed into the scheme to expand the indoor-outdoor mountain experience. Ceilings were removed to open up and display the impressive beam structure. A combination of Arts and Crafts and Asian styles were developed both in the exterior and interior details and finishes. Subsequently, Bittersweet has become a mountain oasis for it’s many year round guests. See their website at www.bittersweetcottage.com.
