Club View Road

This was and still is a 2,700 s.f. brick rancher, yet this project resulted in a complete makeover while maintaining the original footprint and exterior structure. The house was built in 1954 in a lovely location adjacent to the Grove Park Inn Golf Club in Asheville.

During our initial meeting, my clients expressed that they enjoyed cooking and engaging with their family and friends. They wanted the bathrooms updated, a more functional master bedroom and a larger kitchen. The house had a traditional layout with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a small kitchen, separate dining and living rooms with an adjoining 570 s.f. family room. It didn’t take long before we all agreed that the large family room would be converted to the master bedroom suite.

In order to expand the kitchen, a wall between the existing kitchen and dining was removed, stairs leading to the basement were relocated, a bump out in the existing kitchen became a pantry. One of the bedrooms was opened up to the new kitchen as the new dining room. Both baths were redesigned and a powder room was created by rearranging existing closets.

An existing curved wall in the hallway prompted the design of large graceful arched openings with custom woodwork between the newly created spaces. This concept extended to the design of curved counter surfaces in the kitchen along with a reflected curved dropped ceiling over the cooking area.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas were designed to create a spacious environment while still feeling intimate. The chef’s kitchen includes a 48” 8-burner BlueStar cook top and top of the line BlueStar double ovens. Custom cabinets and generous counter surfaces of quartzite and leathered granite enhance the elegance and functionality to create the heart of this home. The adjacent pantry provides additional kitchen storage.

Anchoring the living room is a wood-burning fireplace accented with a custom designed sapele wood surround. Sliding patio doors open up to a copper-roofed stone patio with beautiful long-range mountain views.

In order to visually buffer the new master bedroom from the living area, a passageway between the two spaces was designed as a small library. Custom wood paneling, also sapele, and arched openings that trim the built-in unit and doorways finish this space. The master bedroom suite includes another wood burning fireplace with a custom designed surround, a large walk-in closet, and a bath with a radiant heat floor and a two person walk-in shower.

Club View Road

The owners enjoy supporting the local artists and have collected pieces they enjoy. An example of this is a handmade stoneware pottery sink made by Ed Racicot which sits on reclaimed oak in the powder room.

All of the lighting is high efficiency and low-maintenance LED. A programmable whole house wiring system controls the heating and air, security, audio, video and lighting systems of the home.

The exterior of the house was enhanced with bay windows, a new copper- roofed front porch overlooking the Grove Park Inn property and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Exterior double-hung windows in the front and back were replaced with large patio doors, opening up the new kitchen/dining and living areas to the outdoor spaces.

The original driveway brought guests to the back of house. A new circular drive surfaced with exposed river rock mixed with tinted concrete creates a convenient and attractive approach for guests. A stone stairway provides an elegant path to the home.

Club View Road

The owners fell in love with the tranquility the back yard offered when they first viewed the property. As one of the final details of the project, a circular patio in the back yard was resurfaced with large stone slabs and surrounded with low walls built with native stone. A gentle stone walkway now connects the new deck to their intimate outdoor space.
