Updating an Arts & Crafts Historic Home in a To-Die-For Location
Recipient of the 2010 Griffin Award
The owners realized that you can rarely find the house you imagine in the location one wishes for the price one budgeted. Thus, although they had been searching for an Arts & Crafts bungalow, they purchased this house in Asheville primarily because of its location and the layout of its interior spaces. The house was a 1950’s ranch style home sited on a lovely street lined with old sycamores and homes of architectural merit. The back yard abuts the Grove Park Inn and Resort golf course with spectacular views of several fairways. In truth, this house might have been characterized as the worst house on the best street, and they knew all along that they wanted it to be transformed to fit in with the character of other homes in the neighborhood.
While we discussed their preferences and needs, the owners mentioned that they had a close friend in Asheville whose stone yard and masonry business could provide and install local Hooper’s Creek stone. With this material in mind, I developed the design for the exterior to become an English stone cottage while planning to incorporate Arts & Crafts design elements into the interior by master carpenter Ashton Walton.
In order to accentuate the slope and scale of the roof, the existing ridge was raised four feet with fabricated trusses. As the roofline approached the ground, additional curved rafters were applied to the existing decking to create deep overhangs with a gentle swag. Additional intersecting gable structures were built in the front: one to accommodate a new garage where a carport had existed, and the other to create a pronounced entrance. New high performance windows and French doors were installed throughout the house. We were able to incorporate antique stained glass windows which the owners found years earlier into the design of some of the masonry openings.
